Canadian ski operators face staff hiring challenges

The early blast of winter at the start of November has given a couple of local ski hills the base they need for some of their earliest openings, while forecasts hint at a chilly, snowy season.

But how much business success ski hills can carve out of the season will depend in part on their ability to recruit enough staff in an extremely tight labour market.

“We’ve had a very successful hiring so far this season, so we’re definitely in great shape for getting open,” said Julia Grant, communications manager for Grouse Mountain. Grouse is to open Friday at 3 p.m. Cypress is also opening Friday.

The early forecasts are for a La Niña winter, which is expected to deliver cooler, wetter and snowier conditions for mountains, Grant said, so that bodes well for a long season.

“That’s what we had last year and it was a great snow season, so we’re excited about that,” Grant said. Read more…
