Guest worker legislation addresses worker shortage
Employers will be temporarily allowed to hire thousands of unskilled immigrant workers for seasonal jobs under a provision in the recently signed federal spending bill.
Processors along the Gulf Coast often rely upon immigrant workers, using the H-2B visa program, to fill their workforce needs. But because of the seasonal nature of the industry, businesses have found it difficult to remain fully staffed year after year.
Returning workers who received a visa in the previous three years will not be counted against the annual 66,000 limit under the new legislation. The impact is it allows those workers to stay for up to 10 months. It also restricts the Labor Department from implementing new rules governing seasonal workers. Read More…
